SpaceX confirmed plans to sell shares to the public for the first time, according to a securities filing Wednesday outlining the company’s fundamentals — and the announcement shines a spotlight on Southern California’s growing aerospace and defense economy.
The initial public offering could make CEO Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire. The IPO is expected to take place next month and would likely be the biggest IPO ever, surpassing the $29.4 billion raised by Saudi Aramco in 2020.
The filing shows SpaceX reported a net loss of $4.3 billion for the three months ended March 31. SpaceX made $18.6 billion in revenue in 2025. The company would trade on the Nasdaq exchange under the ticker symbol SPCX.
What This Means for San Diego
While SpaceX is headquartered in Brownsville, Texas, its legacy and supply chain are deeply rooted in Southern California. The company’s rocket development operations and key suppliers stretch across the region, from Hawthorne to the testing facilities that support the Starship program.
San Diego’s defense and aerospace sector stands to benefit from increased investor attention and supply chain activity driven by the SpaceX IPO. The region is home to major defense contractors and advanced manufacturing firms that supply components for space and satellite systems.
The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation has identified aerospace as a priority growth sector, and SpaceX’s public market debut could accelerate investment in the region’s space-adjacent industries.
Starlink’s Growing Reach
SpaceX also owns Starlink, the satellite-based internet service that has proved especially popular in rural areas. Starlink reached deals with several governments and foreign telecommunications companies to expand overseas. The service competes in some places with Amazon’s Project Kuiper.
